When this tin toy, produced
by the Sankei Co., was new, tiny baseballs would be released from a hole in the
blue arc in front of the Nagashima figure.
Nagashima would take a swing at each ball, and sometimes hit one. However, the toy is non-operational at this
point. Therefore, the Nagashima torso is
currently fixed in a leaning forward position.
The lot as offered here does not include the seven little baseballs that
originally came with the toy.
The base contains images of
various Japan Pro Baseball logos and players dressed in team uniforms. We know that the only year in which all logos
and uniform styles appearing on the toy were used was 1959. Thus, we are assigning the toy a 1959 year of
manufacture.
Interestingly, the same toy
was sold in the United States, only with Mickey Mantle as the batter instead of
Nagashima. If you click on the link
provided here, you will be able to see the Mantle toy in action. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/MNR-WCS-qLQ
