This
is the first Hiroshi Nakao single signed item that we have ever been able to
offer! Hiroshi Nakao (1919-1977) passed away at the
tender age of 58. As a result, there are
very few single signed Nakao items in existence, let alone baseball cards. In this case, the signature on the baseball
card most likely dates from around 1950, making the card an even more important
keepsake.
Nakao's
lifetime statistics make it clear as to why he is in the Hall of Fame--209
wins, 127 losses, 2.48 ERA. He threw 43 shutouts among 184 complete games and
held opposing hitters to a .216 batting average. Surprisingly, the left hander,
despite his otherwise dazzling statistics, had a penchant for wildness. During
his career, he walked nearly five batters per nine innings pitched--more than
he struck out! Thus, he was the epitome of a wild lefty.
