These very scarce cards were issued in uncut panels of three within the pages of a boys' magazine over a period of several months during 1959. According to the information on the backs, 100 cards of sports stars (various sports) were issued, but we believe that the number of different baseball player cards is just 33. Nearly all cards from this set seen today are singles, cut from the panels after they were removed from the magazine. The cards are quite scarce in any form.  Japanese Baseball Cards Checklist & Price Guide, Vintage Edition 3.0 has given the JBR 61 set an R4 designation, indicating that 10 or fewer examples of each card are known.

Katsuya Nomura, a catcher, belted 657 home runs during 27 year career (1954-1980). He was perhaps the Pacific League's greatest pre-Ichiro player and certainly the best catcher in the history of Japanese baseball. He was selected to the Pacific League Best 9 team for 13 consecutive seasons. He won the triple crown in 1965. After retirement, he went on to become a very successful manager.
