The 1931 U.S. Major League All Star Tour of Japan was the first Japan Tour in which an entire team consisting of top American major leaguers ventured to the Land of the Rising Sun. The U.S. cast of players included Hall of Famers Lefty Grove, Lou Gehrig, Mickey Cochrane, George Kelly, Frankie Frisch, Rabbit Maranville, Al Simmons and Japan Hall of Fame member, Lefty O'Doul. The Tour was met with great enthusiasm by the Japanese public. As a result, the left hand portion of this dual photo is described in the accompanying text as a "tumultuous welcome" which the team received upon arrival in Japan. The right hand photo depicts Hall of Famer and 1931 American League MVP Lefty Grove working out in preparation for a game. Grove is pictured in his 1931 Japan Tour uniform. The photo is stamped on the back as being the property of Underwood & Underwood, the famous news photography company of the early 20th century.

Size: Photo--8" x 10"

Condition: The photo is sharp and clear. The text sheet attached to the bottom is as issued. There is a crease and a chip at the bottom left border and minor wear at the other three corners, none of which affects the actual photo.
