Osamu Mihara had an illustrious career at Waseda U. as a second baseman. After participating in the 1934 U.S. All Star Tour of Japan, featuring Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, Mihara was the first player ever signed by the Tokyo Giants. After the war he returned to the Giants as manager, and ultimately managed five different Japan Pro Baseball teams. Known as the "Magic Manager", Mihara's teams won six pennants and four Japan Series titles. He won championships with three different franchises.

In 1960, Mihara injected some of his magic into the generally lowly Taiyo Whales. Taking over as the team's manager after the Whales had finished dead last in the Central League in each of the previous six seasons, Mihara led the team to the Japan Series championship! The JF 9 card offered here depicts Mihara as Whales manager during that championship season.
