We had always suspected that the 1949 JCM 78 San Francisco Seals Japan Tour Menko set consisted of 20 cards, but only 19 different cards had been checklisted. Finally, the missing 20th card in the set has been found. Surprisingly, the card depicts Boston Red Sox outfielder, Dom DiMaggio.

This is a very odd choice of players for a Seals Tour card set. All other players featured in the set are members of the 1949 Seals team plus manager Lefty O'Doul (see next lot). DiMaggio had played for the Seals in 1937 through 1939, but in 1949 he batted .307 for the Red Sox and made the A.L. All-Star team. Coincidentally, he was a member of the 1951 Major League All Stars Tour of Japan.

It's very possible that this card was printed in error and was pulled at some point during set production, as we have seen numerous examples of all other cards in the set. Unfortunately, we will never know why this card appears to be a short print. However, we are quite happy to have discovered it.
