This is the first time we have had the pleasure of offering this striking color image of the God of Batting. Kawakami's team name, surname and position are printed in Japanese text at the bottom. The catcher and umpire are unidentified.

Before joining the Yomiuri Giants, Kawakami played for his high school, Kumamoto Tech, in the Summer 1937 National High School Championship at Koshien. His team was defeated in the championship game. After the game, he grabbed a handful of dirt from the playing field and put it in his pocket as a memento. Thus began a Koshien tradition which is still commonly seen to this day. The following season, Kawakami began his 21 year career as the Giants' first sacker. Blank backed card.

Size: 7 3/8" x 5 7/8"

Condition: G/Vg. The paper and glue residue on the reverse are the result of the card's original placement on a display sheet by the manufacturer. All examples of this card will contain similar residue.
