This card may have been originally issued as a third prize winner card on a display sheet for an unknown set. However, uncharacteristically, there is no extra paper or glue on the blank back due to previous attachment to such a sheet. In any case, it must be regarded as unique to the hobby, as we have never seen another. We do know that the card dates from around 1955, given the uniform being worn in the picture.
Shigeru Sugishita was one of the premier pitchers of the 1950s, racking up 215 wins in just 11 seasons. His curveball was said to be devastating. He won over 30 games in a season twice and won three Sawamura (Japan Cy Young) Awards. Sugishita, at age 95, is still alive, making him the current oldest living Hall of Fame member in either the Japan or U.S. Hall of Fame.
