This card was originally a second prize winner card which appeared on a display sheet for an unknown bromide set. It was most likely issued in early 1949, as a close inspection of the image reveals that the letter printed on Bessho's cap has been altered, and his jersey contains no team name. Bessho moved from the Hawks to the Giants prior to the 1949 season. The text on the card lists Bessho as a member of the Giants. We have never before seen an example of this card.

Takehiko Bessho was Japan's premier pitcher during the late 1940s and early 1950s. He twice won 30 or more games in a season, baffling hitters with a variety of off speed deliveries. During his career, he won two MVP awards and two Sawamura (Japanese Cy Young) awards. He won 310 games and had a lifetime ERA of only 2.18. Blank backed card.

Size: 4 7/16" x 5 15/16"

Condtion: Would be Nm, but has two minor ink marks on the front. There is evidence of having been originally attached to a display sheet on the blank back, as is the case with all cards originally issued on display sheets.
