Japanese newspaper companies traditionally advertised their product by producing large promotional posters containing the day's headlines and photos. These posters were placed in glass display cases along busy streets and at train stations. This example, produced by the Asahi Photo News, depicts a first ball ceremony at Yankee Stadium on October 2, 1960. Casey Stengel is shown next to Crown Prince Akihito who is throwing the first ball from the stands. Akihito was later to become Emperor Akihito, who reigned from 1989 until April 2019, when he abdicated his throne due to age and declining health. The 30 years of his reign were known as the Heisei Era. The October 2 contest was the last game of the regular season, won by the Yankees by a score of 8-7 over the Boston Red Sox. The Yankees finished the regular season with a record of 97-57 and would go on to lose the World Series on a dramatic, walk off home run by Bill Mazeroski of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Size: 14 3/4" x 10 1/8"

Condition: Would be Ex/Mt + except for various pin holes near the corners from the poster's having been displayed as an advertisement for the newspaper in 1960.
