Of the several Hawaiian baseball players who entered Japan Pro Baseball in 1952 following the success of Hawaiian rookie Wally Yonamine the previous year, the most prominent was Jun Hirota, who became the Yomiuri Giants' main
catcher for the next four seasons. A graduate of McKinley High School in Honolulu, Hirota next played for the famed Hawaii Asahi team, before moving on to the Giants in Japan. For three consecutive years (1953 to 1955) Hirota was
named to the Central League Best 9 team.
