Tetsuharu Kawakami (1920-2013), known as the "God of Batting", played for the Yomiuri Giants from 1938 to 1958. He finished his career with a .313 lifetime batting average. As manager of the Giants, he led the team to nine consecutive Japan Series titles from 1965 to 1973. Kawakami was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1965. Here, he penned the Japanese inscription "effort", as was his custom, along with his signature.
