This is the first example of this card that we have ever encountered. Undoubtedly, it was originally a first prize winner from a display sheet that was produced in honor of the U.S. Major League All Stars Tour of Japan in 1951. In our February 2005 auction, we sold a very similar giant sized card with the same image, but that card had a photo that was cropped a bit differently, and the sizing of the image was different. DiMaggio's entire body was a bit larger in the 2005 version. The white autograph near the bottom is a facsimile. The 1951 Tour was the only Major League All Star or New York Yankee Japan Tour in which DiMaggio participated. In nine games, he batted .296 with two homers. This is a truly rare artifact featuring the Yankee Clipper. Blank backed.
Size: 6 3/4" x 9 1/8"
Condition: Ex/Mt. There is extra paper and glue on the back, as the card was issued on a display sheet. Possibly, this card has been trimmed. The borders are not perfectly straight. However, since no other example has ever been uncovered, we have no basis for providing a definitive answer.
