JGA 16 is the only known card for each of these two umpires. Like U.S. cards, Japanese cards of umpires were rarely issued. Hachiro Mitani was a third baseman at Keio U. in the Japan Big Six League during the 1920s. After the formation of Japan Pro Baseball, he was the manager of the Hawks during the 1939, 1941 and 1942 seasons. He later became a Central League umpire. Mitsuru Enjoji was a Japan Pro Baseball umpire for more than 25 years. The former Hosei U. star was involved in one of the most controversial decisions in Japan Series history in 1961. In the bottom of the ninth inning of Game 4 between the Hawks and Giants, a pitch that appeared to be over the plate, and would have ended the game in the Hawks' favor was called a ball. A vociferous protest broke out. After order was restored, the Giants came back to win, and subsequently won the Series.
