Wakabayashi's best season was undoubtedly 1944 when he had a 22-4 record, a 1.56 ERA and was named the league's most valuable player. He was an outstanding manager as well as player. In fact, he was the Tigers' manager in 1944, leading them to the league title both from the mound and the dugout. In his five seasons at the helm of the Tigers, they finished first twice and third the other three years. It is fascinating that during World War II, Wakabayashi, an American, was the pennant winning manager and star pitcher on a Japan Pro Baseball team. Blank backed card.
