Calpis is a Japanese drink that was first marketed in 1919. The handkerchief, still enclosed in its original packaging, features a facsimile signature of a young Shigeo Nagashima. It was likely distributed in the early 1960s based on the style of the autograph. (Nagashima has
changed his signature several times over the years.) The packaging includes the original Calpis logo, which was developed from a painting by a German artist depicting a black person wearing a Panama hat drinking Calpis. As the logo came to be considered politically
incorrect, the black and white colors were reversed. Finally, the logo was dropped all together.
Size: The packaging as shown is 3 7/8" x 7 1/2". The handkerchief size is unknown.
Condition: Mint
