Large paper scoreboards like this one hung at newspaper offices and other high traffic areas of Japan. Passers by could see updated scores of important games on their way to or from work. This scoreboard was produced by the Tokyo Nichi Nichi Shimbun (Tokyo Daily News) which was a predecessor of the Mainichi Shimbun. While there is no date on this scoreboard, it is known that the Tokyo Nichi Nichi Shimbun merged with the Osaka Mainichi newspaper to form the Mainichi Shimbun in 1943, and that theTokyo Nichi Nichi Shimbun name was never used again. Therefore, this scoreboard must predate that merger. The scoreboard includes areas to record the pitchers, catchers and umpires, teams playing, etc., as well as the inning by inning score. Paper scoreboards similar to this one were used to record scores during the 1931 and 1934 US Major League All Star Tours of Japan.
