As a New Year's gift each year, Yakyu Shonen (Youth Baseball) produced a baseball game card set which was a free premium given to purchasers of that month's magazine. The cards were issued in loose uncut sheets held in place over the magazine cover by "cigar band" type binding that wrapped around both the cards and magazine. Purchasers immediately removed the cigar band, separating the card sheets from the magazine. The cards were then cut into singles by the purchaser and used to play a game. We know these cards today as the Yakyu Shonen game card sets issued annually from 1948/49 to 1952/53. This lot consists of the magazines that were sold with the 1949 San Francisco Seals and 1948 Purple Tint card sets. This is a rare opportunity for owners of these two baseball card sets to also own the magazines issued with the cards. The 1948 magazine has a great foldout calendar on the inside front page containing a large color drawing of Tetsuharu Kawakami, Hiroshi Oshita and Noboru Aota. The 1949 magazine has a nice photo article about the recently completed San Francisco Seals Tour of Japan. Both magazines are filled with photos of Japanese baseball. Japanese text.
