Umpire Doug Harvey was nicknamed "God" by major league players. He was a commanding presence behind the plate at National League games from 1962 to 1992. He was almost universally rated as the best umpire of his era. In 2010, he was elected to the Hall of fame.

In 1966, Doug Harvey accompanied the Los Angeles Dodgers on their post season Tour of Japan to work as an umpire. During that trip, he acquired a number of souvenirs. One of these is a game used Yomiuri Giants cap worn by Giants outfielder Akira Kunimatsu during the tour. Kunimatsu homered during the first game of the 18 played between the Dodgers and various Japanese teams.

The cap contains Kunimatsu's surname on the inside tag under the button. On the outside of the bill, Harvey, or someone else, attached a label reading "Yomiuri Giants Dodger's (sic) Goodwill Tour Japan 1966".
