These three large photo cards have no printing on them, except the player names that a previous owner wrote in ink on the blank backs. The cards are printed on a stock often used for bromide baseball cards of the era. Bromide baseball cards are generally defined as mass produced cards on cardboard stock containing a baseball image or images and some printed text. Therefore, these cards fall into a grey area. In any case, they contain excellent images of players from the First Golden Era of Tokyo Big 6 League baseball.

Susumu Kawase (left) was a true utility player. He was the shortstop for the Koyo Middle School team from Nishinomiya during the 1926 National Baseball High School Championship Tournament at Koshien. He entered Keio U. in 1928 as a catcher, often forming a battery with future Hall of Famer, Shigeru Mizuhara. By 1930, Kawase was Keio's second baseman. In 1931, he was their third baseman.

Kawase played second base against the U.S. Major League All Stars featuring Lou Gehrig and Lefty Grove in three 1931 Tour games. He went 1 for 7 at the plate and even pitched during one of the contests!

Yukinobu Kusumi (center) was an outfielder at Keio U. at the same time as Kawase and Mizuhara were playing there. During the 1950s, Kusumi was Assistant Manager of the Kokutetsu Swallows.

After starring at Meiji University from 1927 to 1931, Kaiichi Masu (right) later joined Japan Pro Baseball, where he patrolled the outfield for the Nagoya team from 1936 (first year of JPB) until 1943. At times he was player/manager.

Size: Each card is 3 3/8" x 5 3/8".

Condition: All cards have the player name written neatly on the blank back by a previous owner. The Kawase card has a bit of ink staining on the front, but is otherwise Ex/Mt. The Kusumi card is Ex/Mt. The Masu card is Good. The upper left corner is creased.
