This is the first example of any Shigeru Sugishita giant sized bromide baseball card that we have ever had the pleasure to offer. We know that this uncatalogued card dates from 1952, because the uniform/cap combination that Shigeru Sugishita is wearing dates from either the 1952 or 1953 season. Moreover, the printed team notation of "Nagoya" appears on the card. His team name changed to Chunichi in 1953. In any case, it is a truly rare card which was undoubtedly issued as a 1st Prize winner card on a display sheet.

Shigeru Sugishita was one of the premier pitchers of the 1950s, racking up 215 wins in just 11 seasons. His curveball and forkball were said to be devastating. He won over 30 games in a season twice and won three Sawamura (Japan Cy Young) Awards. Sugishita, at age 96, is still alive, making him the current oldest living Hall of Fame member in either the Japan or U.S. Hall of Fame.
