Prior to the recent discovery of this card, 14 different cards were known to be in the JDM 15 set. The set carries the designation of R5 in the Japanese Baseball Card Checklist & Price Guide, Vintage Edition 2.1, meaning that five or fewer copies of each card in the set are known to exist. The Yamashita find adds a 15th card to the set, and is of course unique at this point.

In 1925, Minoru Yamashita hit the first home run ever in the National High School Baseball Championships at Koshien. From 1927 to 1930, Yamashita starred at Keio U., participating on four Big Six League championship clubs. His six career homers was a record at that time. No wonder he was known as "Babe" Yamashita!

In 1934, Babe Yamashita faced Babe Ruth when the All Japan team played a 16 game series against the U.S. All Stars. It was no contest, as Ruth batted .408 with 13 homers and 33 RBI, while Yamashita, who played in only seven of the contests batted a meager .158 with no homers and 1 RBI.
