Of the many cards produced in Japan of Lefty O'Doul in honor of the 1949 San Francisco Seals Tour of Japan, this is one of the scarcest. This is one of a cache of only four examples found earlier this year. They are the only four examples that we have ever seen for sale or auction. O'Doul, a Japan Hall of Fame member, spearheaded this Tour, which was one of the very first postwar peacetime cultural exchanges between Japan and the United states.
Despite the fact that the Seals were not a major league team, this was one of the most highly anticipated of all U.S. team Japan Tours. The Seals won all ten of the games they played against Japanese opposition. Nevertheless, crowds of up to 70,000 fans attended each game and they were not disappointed.
