In 1963, Shinji Hamazaki was the Swallows' manager, and Masaichi Kaneda was his ace pitcher. Kaneda won 30 games that season while posting a 1.98 ERA. However, the Swallows posted a pedestrian 65-73-2 record, finishing 4th in the Central League, which resulted in Hamazaki's departure after only one season at the helm of the Swallows.

Kaneda would go on to win 400 games in his career. Hamazaki would retire from managing after the 1963 season. The 5' 1" Hamazaki had enjoyed an outstanding career at Keio U. He had pitched against the U.S. All Star team featuring Babe Ruth in 1934, and until 2014 was the oldest pitcher ever to win a Japan Pro Baseball game (48 years, 4 months).

The baseball offered here was signed boldly by both pitching greats in black marker.
