We offer here the earliest known pictorial reference to baseball in Japan. It was discovered in a school reader book, printed in Japanese and published in July 1882. The baseball scene consists of a batter holding a bat, with a ball in the air and a catcher at his position.

Size: 5 1/2" x 8 1/4". 35 pages.

Condition: The covers are battered and contain ink writing added by previous owners. However, the integrity of the binding is excellent, and the inside pages are in outstanding condition, including the page with the baseball image.
