While we are aware of similar issues from Yakyu Graph magazine in 1930 and Yakyukai magazine in 1933/34, this is the first example that we have seen from the previously unknown1930/31 Yakyukai set. Apparently, a giant sized bromide was used as the centerfold for the magazine in numerous issues during 1930 and 1931. This premium was placed in the March 1930 edition of Yakyukai.

Previously, we knew of only one baseball card or premium depicting Yasuhiro Itami. that being the 1933 Team Pennant Back menko, which contains a cartoon image bearing absolutely no resemblance to the player. Thus, we have now discovered a premium of Itami that predates his only previously known card, meaning that this item is the true Yasuhiro Itami rookie. At this point, it is the only example known.

Yasuhiro Itami was a standout catcher for Waseda U. during the late 1920s, leading the Tokyo Big Six University League in batting during the Spring 1926 season. He never turned pro because of the negative image of professional baseball in Japan during the 1930s, instead playing in the Japan Intercity Baseball Tournaments and umpiring in the Big Six League. In the early 1940s he was manager of the Waseda U. baseball team.

This blank backed premium would be an important addition to any collection of Japan Hall of Fame member cards.

Size: 9 1/4" x 12 3/8"

Condition: The premium served as a magazine centerfold, so it contains a horizontal fold across the center. Otherwise Ex/Mt.
