A shitajiki is a plasticized piece of thin cardboard that a student places under his/her writing paper so as not to scratch his/her desk. This shitajiki is special because it contains an early style Shigeo Nagashima facsimile autograph, but more importantly it depicts Nagashima's first professional game (which occurred in 1958, probably a few years before the shitajiki was issued).

Unfortunately, Nagashima had to begin his career facing Japan's greatest pitcher ever, Masaichi Kaneda. Sadly for Nagashima fans, Kaneda struck out Nagashima in all four of his at bats. However, Nagashima rebounded to lead the Giants to the Central League pennant and be named Central League Rookie of the Year. From there, he went on to become one of the best and most revered players in Japan baseball history.
