Walt Judnich, a San Francisco native, began his big league career with the St. Louis Browns in 1940, A big, left handed centerfielder, Judnich had a great rookie year, batting .303 with 24 homers. He followed up his strong initial campaign with averages of .284 and .313 in 1941 and 1942 respectively, before joining the U.S. Army Air Force. Returning to MLB at the start of 1946, Judnich was a serviceable player, but did not enjoy seasons like he had before the war. By 1948, he was a part time player with the world champion Cleveland Indians. He finished his big league career early in 1949 and headed west to join his hometown team, the San Francisco Seals. 1949 would be his last season with the Seals until 1955, as he played for various other PCL teams during the intervening years. Interestingly, Judnich did not go on the Seals' Goodwill Tour of Japan. Perhaps, he had already been released by the time the Tour began. Nevertheless, a number of Judnich cards were produced in Japan in anticipation of the Tour, and the lot offered here is one of them. The card was originally a 2nd prize card attached to a display sheet by the manufacturer, and has paper and glue residue from this attachment, as is the case with any 2nd prize Japanese card. Blank backed.
