The Asahi Sports was the king of prewar Japanese monthly baseball magazines. These very large size magazines (10" x 15") were key chronicles of the golden age of Big Six University baseball. The huge cover photos almost invariably
make wonderful display pieces. Another unique feature of Asahi Sports is that most photo captions and some text are written in English, making the magazines ideal for Americans to collect. Few magazines from this era survived World
War II, which makes these mid to high grade examples that much scarcer.
The Asahi Sports generally consists of about 75% baseball content, with 25% devoted to other sports. There are many sepia tone and green tone, high quality photos inside. Often, there are photo stories dealing with U.S. Major League
Baseball. There are two full page stories about the 1927 Yankees, which include a team photo and pictures of Ruth, Gehrig, et al. Other American players pictured include Jimmie Foxx, Connie Mack, Mickey Cochrane, Rogers Hornsby,
Eddie Collins and more. However, most articles and photos dealing with baseball relate to the Tokyo Big Six University league. Most covers feature large photos of Big Six U. stars, including covers of rarely seen HOFers Shinjiro Iguchi and
Tomoo Hirooka. Two of the magazines are special editions devoted to a just completed Big Six University League season, and are filled with large team and individual player photos, along with individual and team statistics printed in
Japanese. The 1934 issue has Hawaiian, Henry "Bozo" Wakabayashi (HOF) on the cover.
