From May 28 to June 16, 1928, the University of Southern California baseball team, coached by the great Wahoo Sam Crawford, played ten games against Waseda U. and Meiji U. in Japan, winning four and losing six. The right fielder for
the Trojans was Abe W. Johnson, Jr. Johnson lettered in baseball for the Men of Troy in 1928 and 1929. Interestingly, his father, the cigar chomping Abe Johnson, Sr., was an Orange County, California legend, who among other things
became the first Sheriff of Laguna Beach. It is unknown what happened to Johnson, Jr. after he left USC. Page 7 of the passport contains the entry and exit stampings, as well as his visa. Old U.S. passports are quite interesting. To have
the passport used by a baseball player during his Tour of Japan is quite special! Also included in this lot is the "Quarantine Slip" issued to Mr. Johnson for use on the team's transport ship, the S.S. Siberia Maru.
