Primarily a shortstop, Tabe was known for his brilliant baseball mind. A prolific base stealer, he joined the Dai Nippon (later Tokyo Giants) baseball club for their mid 1930s Tour of the U.S. following his graduation from Meiji University.
During that 110 game tour, Tabe stole 105 bases, primarily against American major and minor league opposition. Shortly after his return to Japan, Tabe quit the Giants, never to play Japan Pro Baseball. Sadly, Tabe was killed in Okinawa
during World War II.
